Chemical Storage Containers and the DOT: Just the Facts!

It’s no secret that the chemical industry has an inherent need to move regulated goods – it’s the nature of the business, after all. But what qualities should you look for in a chemical storage container in order to move your liquids safely? After reading this great article in PCI Magazine, we wanted to share some best practices gleaned from the DOT.

But first, how are chemicals classified? This category can encompass paints, solvents, coatings and other liquids included in packaging groups II and III. And transporting them can be as simple as moving them across your plant ― or even across the pond! Below are a few general guidelines regarding shipping regulated goods via chemical storage containers (IBCs). For optimal transportation of liquids, chemical storage containers should be:

• Well Maintained
  Free of visible corrosion, contamination and cracking which could impact the integrity of the container 

• Chemically Compatible
  Closures such as seals and gaskets must be designed of the correct material in order to remain unaffected by chemical solvents.  Check out our Chemical Compatibility Guide to review guidelines. 

• Inspected Regularly
  A leak proof test should be performed every 30 months, with internal inspections and thickness tests  performed on metal chemical storage tanks every 5 years. See the IBC testing guidelines.

• Clearly Marked
  Manufacturer name and inspection date must be tagged and clearly visible on the container.
